How To Measure Nut Sizes And Record Data

Nuts are key fasteners used in conjunction with bolts. If they don’t know their specifications, we can confirm them through accurate measurements. The following will introduce the standard measurement methods, required tools, and specifications of nuts in detail to help you easily master measurement skills.

Measurement Method Of General Hex Nut:

Prepare measuring tools:

Prepare measuring tools

Prepare a vernier caliper, either mechanical or electronic, a narrow steel ruler, a thread gauge, paper, and a pen needed to record data.

Measure the external dimensions of the nut:

Width of opposite sides (S):

Use a vernier caliper to measure the distance between two opposite parallel planes to ensure that the measuring surface of the caliper fits perfectly with the plane. It is recommended to average multiple measurements to reduce human error.

Diagonal width (e) (maximum outer diameter of hex nut):

Measure the maximum span distance of two non-adjacent vertices. For a standard hexagonal nut, the theoretical relationship should be e ≈ 1.1547 × S, which can be used for reference verification.

Nut height (L)::

Place the vernier caliper vertically on the upper and lower end faces of the nut, keep it parallel to the thread axis, and measure the overall thickness of the nut.

Measurement Method Of General Hex Nut

Measure thread parameters

  • Measure internal thread diameter (d)

Insert the vernier caliper measuring claw into the inner hole of the nut and adjust it to slight contact with the thread top. Ensure that the measuring surface is along the diameter direction to avoid inclination causing reading deviation. For small-size nuts, it is recommended to use a fine-tip caliper claw to improve the measurement accuracy.

  • Determination of pitch (P) or number of teeth per inch (TPI)

The measurement method using a thread gauge:

Select threaded gauge pieces of different specifications to match with the internal thread of the nut in turn, and observe which gauge piece can completely match the thread profile. Record the marked value of the matching gauge piece (the pitch P is directly read for metric threads, and the TPI is read for imperial threads).

  • Measurement method without thread gauge:

Metric thread (pitch P, unit mm): Use a steel ruler or caliper to directly measure the distance between the tops of two adjacent threads. Or measure the total length of 10 threads and divide it by 10.

Imperial threads (number of teeth per inch TPI): Use a steel ruler to measure the number of complete threads within a length of 1 inch. If there is insufficient space, you can measure the total length of 10 teeth and convert it into TPI (TPI = 25.4/(total length/number of teeth))

Measurement Method Of Special Nuts

For nuts with complex shapes, in addition to conventional thread parameters (thread diameter, pitch, etc.), it is also necessary to measure the key dimensions of their special structure, as follows:

Eye nut: In addition to the thread specifications, the inner diameter, outer diameter, and ring thickness of the lifting ring need to be measured.

Wing nut: It is necessary to measure the maximum outer width of the two wings and the height difference (or overall height) between the wings and the nut body.

Flange nut: It is necessary to measure the outer diameter of the flange, the thickness of the flange, and the transition size between the flange and the threaded part (such as the step height).

Spring nut: In addition, measure the length of the spring and the diameter of the spring.

Cap nut: In addition, it is necessary to measure the maximum outer diameter of the dome, the vertical distance from the nut base surface to the apex of the dome, and the top angle. If it is a conical dome, use an angle gauge or projector to measure the angle (α) between the conical surface and the axis. If it is a spherical dome, the standard R-value can be compared by contour projection.

Draw Schematic Diagram And Label Data

Draw a diagram of the nut, and mark each dimension with letters in the diagram, such as d (outer diameter), d (inner diameter), H (height), S (distance from opposite sides), P (pitch), etc. Most nuts are right-handed threads, so be careful when measuring. If it is a left-handed reverse thread, LH should also be recorded to facilitate comparison and purchase.

(Thread angle is 60 °) Marking method of ISO metric specifications:

  • Metric nuts are represented by “thread diameter × pitch”, for example: M8-1.25 represents a nominal diameter of 8 mm and a pitch of 1.25 mm. Standard coarse nuts (such as ISO standards) can omit the pitch, such as a thread diameter of 10 mm, a default pitch of 1.5 mm (coarse thread). Can be written directly as M10.
  • For fine threads, the pitch cannot be omitted. For example, if the thread diameter is 12 mm and the pitch is 1.0 mm (fine teeth), it will be written as M12-1.0.

Marking of UN imperial specifications:

  • Imperial nuts are expressed by “Thread Diameter-Teeth Per Inch (TPI)”: UNC (Coarse Teeth): For example, 3/8 “-16 represents a nut diameter of 3/8 inch and 16 teeth per inch.
  • UNF fine thread: 1/2 “-20 represents 1/2 inch diameter, 20 teeth per inch.

(55 ° Thread) Marking of Whitworth Thread

  • BSW (coarse thread): e.g. 1/4 “-20 → 1/4 inch diameter represents 20 teeth per inch.
  • BSF (fine teeth): e.g. 5/16 “-22 → 5/16” diameter represents 22 teeth per inch.

Trapezoidal Thread Nut Identification Method:

Metric trapezoidal thread (Tr/Tr × P), such as Tr 20 × 4 means a nominal diameter of 20mm and pitch of 4mm

Inch Trapezoidal Thread (ACME) Marking Mode Diameter (in)-TPI ACME, For example, 1.5 “-4 ACME means 1.5 inches in diameter and 4 teeth per inch.
